Statement of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic on the attacks on the UN peacekeepers in the Democratic Republic of Congo

9.12.2017 | Vyhlásenia a stanoviská ministerstva

The Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic strongly condemns the attacks by rebels in the province of North Kivu in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo on 7 December 2017, killing 14 and injuring more than 40 UN peacekeepers in the country (MONUSCO). The Slovak Foreign and European Affairs Ministry considers any forms of violence against the UN peacekeeping forces to be inadmissible.  The Ministry calls upon the local authorities to investigate the attack and hold the attackers criminally liable for their act. We also express deep condolences to the families of the deceased soldiers, mostly from Tanzania, and our solidarity to all those who were directly touched by the attack, as well as UN Secretary-General António Guterres on behalf of the Organization of the United Nations, the governments of the United Republic of Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic highly appreciates the service and the bravery of all soldiers, policemen, as well as civil experts, who risk their lives all over the world to promote peace and security under the UN flag. Slovakia has long contributed to the UN peacekeeping missions. Currently, the Slovak soldiers and police men under the UN flag are deployed in Cyprus (UNFICYP), the Golan Heights in Syria (UNTSO) and Haiti (MINUJUSTH).
