Tomorrow (10 December 2017), the international community commemorates the International Human Rights Day. On this day 69 years ago, the UN General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Human rights protection, along with promoting democracy, sustainable development and security, is one of the objectives of Slovakia´s foreign policy. The Slovak Republic promotes this objective in relations with other states, within the European Union policy, as well as at international organizations. We are aware of the fact that human rights protection represents a fundamental for preventing crises and conflicts, which often stem from violating the rule of law, good governance and coexistence principles.

Next year, the Slovak Republic commemorates the 25th anniversary of joining the international organizations active in protecting and promoting human rights – the United Nations, Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, and the Council of Europe.  Since 1 January 2018 and on for three years, Slovakia will be a member of the UN Human Rights Council. In 2019, it will chair the OSCE.
