Statement of the MZVEZ on the 70th Anniversary of the Signing of the Geneva Conventions

12.8.2019 | Vyhlásenia a stanoviská ministerstva

Today, exactly 70 years have passed since the signing of the Geneva Conventions. These fundamental standards of international humanitarian law still continue to be highly relevant today since they guarantee protection to the victims of armed conflicts, be they civilians, the wounded or sick, and regulate the principles of protection for the provision of humanitarian aid, training or health care and for the agencies serving this purpose during armed confits. Despite the fact that these rules have been generally accepted by the international community, we often witness their flagrant violation by various participants in armed conflicts.

On the occasion of today’s anniversary, the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic (MZVEZ SR) appeals to all the parties involved in any armed conflict around the world to strictly adhere to the Geneva Conventions.  The Ministry also expresses its readiness to seek ways to strengthen international humanitarian law together with the respective agencies of other countries during the December conference of the Red Cross and the Red Crescent.

The Committee for International Humanitarian Aid, as an advisory body of the Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, is also cooperating with the Slovak Red Cross to organise an event to commemorate this fundamental milestone in the history of international law.
