Secretary-General of the Council of Europe Marija Pejčinović Burić announced her decision to nominate the Slovak diplomat Drahoslav Štefánek to the position of Special Representative on Migration and Refugees. The position of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General, which Ambassador Štefánek will take on as of 15 January 2020, was created in December 2015 in reaction to the unpreceded inflow of migrants and refugees in several member countries of the Council of Europe.

The job of the special representative is to map the human rights situation of refugees and migrants by visiting refugee camps and submitting reports to the Secretary General of the Council of Europe. The special representative has a close cooperation and engages in an exchange of information with the materially competent structures of the Council of Europe, with member countries of the Council of Europe, and with the relevant international organizations and specialized agencies. The special representative gives impetuses to the Secretary-General to enhance the assistance of the Council of Europe to the countries affected by the migration crisis. His activities will also be geared towards the protection of the rights of refugees and migrants, especially children. Until now Ambassador Štefánek has acted as the Head of Council of Europe Office in Sarajevo.
