The working visit of Lukáš Parízek, State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, to the Czech Republic marks a move forward in the possibilities for both countries in the areas of both security cooperation and economic diplomacy.

On the first day of his official visit (12 March 2019) Parízek represented the Slovak Foreign and European Affairs Ministry at the meetings of the V4 top representatives and at the celebrations on occasion of the 20th anniversary of the countries’ entry into the North Atlantic Alliance.  Together with Slovakia’s Defense Minister Peter Gajdoš, they concentrated on current issues of international security and defense cooperation during an informal negotiation.

On the second day (13 March 2019) Parízek was received by Tomáš Petříček, Czech Foreign Affairs Minister, which attests to the exceptionally high standard of bilateral relations. The meeting was then followed by working meetings within the Ministry.

The talks with Martin Tlapa, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, were based on the successful cooperation in economic diplomacy. “We have a common history and historically strong trade; however, there are new trends that must be addressed, and, therefore, it is appropriate to have a mutual exchange of experiences with the Czech side,” stressed Parízek. The talks also revolved around opportunities for further deepening the mutual cooperation.

Joint projects in development aid bilaterally as well as within the V4 are attractive for public institutions and for the business sector in providing for the fundamental needs of citizens, which include energy solutions and information technologies.

The talks with Martin Povejšil, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs for Security and Multilateral Issues, primarily focused on the activities of Slovakia’s Chairmanship in the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), with a special focus on solving the crisis in Ukraine.  The two partners discussed the financial future of the OSCE, where the issue of the amounts of the contributions represents one of the key tasks of Slovakia in the organization. In the international cooperation both countries place an emphasis on effective multilateralism and the joint fight against terrorism.

Parízek met in Prague with representatives of Slovak compatriot societies and associations in the Czech Republic, where he expressed his greatest appreciation for the activities supporting the Slovak language, traditions and cultural heritage.  “There is a higher number of Slovaks studying and working in the Czech Republic than in any other country.  The activities of compatriots in the third millennium have new formats and channels of communication.  However, I believe that we will continue to be met with solidarity and support for Slovakia.“
