State Secretary of the Slovak Foreign and European Affairs Ministry Lukáš Parízek received today (18 December 2019) Vincenzo Coppola, the EU’s Civilian Operations Commander.

During their talks Parízek highlighted the reinforcement of the civil dimension of EU crisis management.  “The European Union has gradually become a real security player in the world,” underlined the State Secretary. He added:  “In the context of civil crisis management, the Slovak Republic is more visible and more active. Just recently we have announced our interest in becoming the founding member of the European Center of Excellence for Civilian Crisis Management with the headquarters in Berlin."

Coppola introduced the planned changes in the EEAS structures and focused on the revision of the procedures of the selection of the personnel for the mission. He also appreciated the contribution of the Slovak Republic to the civilian missions as well as the ongoing realization of the National Implementation Plan of the Slovak Republic. He also provided information about the state and activities of the existing EEAS civilian missions.

The Slovak Republic started with the first step of the realization of the National Implementation Plan, the objective of which is to strive to increase staff contributions to civilian missions and to improve the coordination and procedures for sending out personnel at the national level. This has been a concrete commitment and confirmation of Slovakia’s engagement in EU crisis management.
