Bratislava (28 January) - Boosting the economy and economic growth will be one of the objectives of Slovakia’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union. This was emphasized by Miroslav Lajčák, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, in two meetings with Slovak and international business leaders today. First, he was the keynote speaker at the evaluation conference of investment in Slovakia that was organized in Bratislava by the American Chamber of Commerce in Slovakia along with the Representation of the European Commission; later he participated in roundtable discussions with officials from the National Employers' Association (RUZ). Both organizations are actively involved in developing Slovakia’s economic policy.

Minister Lajčák reminded at both events that economic diplomacy and dialogue with the business community rank among fundamental priorities of the foreign affairs department and this is also considered in the preparations for the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, when Slovakia will be managing the activities of one of the three most important EU institutions for six months. “We want to make sure that the future of the EU stands on a sounder economic foundation, we want to focus on full use of the potential of the single market, on promoting a favorable business climate and creating jobs,” said Minister Lajčák to the participants in the investment conference in Bratislava. “We aim at improving the global attractiveness of the EU and deepening the economic and monetary union. Just the same, we want to achieve progress in concluding free trade agreements with partners overseas as well as in the European neighborhood,” stated Minister Lajčák in explaining the ideas of Slovakia’s presidency in cooperation with the Netherlands and Malta, the two other countries representing the so-called Presidency Trio together with Slovakia. “Our idea is setting the EU’s economic environment to allow economic growth to continue in the next years as well,” said Minister Lajčák.

Minister Lajčák discussed in more detail the preparations for Slovakia’s first-ever Presidency of the Council of the EU with the RUZ officials in the Bratislava headquarters of this important employer organization. “The Presidency of the Council of the EU is a society-wide event where cooperation with the private and business sectors is indispensable,” stated Minister Lajčák. He reminded that preparations also include public procurements and calls for sponsorships in providing services and goods, preferably from Slovak suppliers, and of Slovak origin.

During the discussion with the RUZ officials, Minister Lajčák also explained the practical role of economic diplomacy, whose aim is developing relations with foreign investors, investment influx to Slovakia and creating such opportunities, or mediating information and contacts for Slovak businesses abroad.
