On 1 January 2019, the Slovak Republic will assume the Chairmanship of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). In this regard, Miroslav Lajčák, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, held talks today (18 December 2018) with the OSCE Secretary General Thomas Greminger in Bratislava. They discussed a broad range of issues related to the execution of the chairmanship; this included the establishment of an active collaboration with the organisation’s secretariat.  The minister informed his partner about the final stage of Slovakia’s preparations for the chairmanship, including a document on the priorities to be submitted at the meeting of the cabinet tomorrow.  “Our chairmanship will be focused mainly on the people who suffer due to conflicts, with the aim of improving their living conditions,” emphasized Minister Lajčák. The minister and the Secretary General also discussed the issue of the organisation’s budget; negotiations on this theme have been led by the Slovak Republic since October. Current security challenges that are being faced today by the communities in the OSCE member states were also the object of their attention, with a special focus on the conflict in the Ukraine and options for its de-escalation. “The Slovak Republic is concerned to seek political solutions which will contribute to a peaceful settlement of the existing disputes,” accentuated Miroslav Lajčák in this regard.
