Minister Lajčák Wraps Up the GLOBSEC Security Conference

8.6.2019 | Aktivity ministra

On 8 June 2019 the Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic Miroslav Lajčák gave an address in the final evaluation panel of the GLOBSEC 2019 Bratislava Forum security conference. The panel entitled “Ideas Harnessing Disruption” was dedicated to a discussion of five key topics (European integration, defense and security, technologies both as a benefit and a threat, sustainable companies and challenges to democracy and the liberal order).

Minister Lajčák stated that since 2018 the world has not become safer. There is increasing talk of a global crisis in political leadership, which is only slowly adapting to the digital revolution. Multilateralism is on the retreat, multipolarity is coming back and multiconceptualism is developing. According to the head of Slovak diplomacy, we still see many paradoxes – trade and commerce is, for example, coming back to the vocabulary of duties, tariffs and barriers. Despite this, we should not succumb to pessimism – several opportunities have been identified during the three-day-conference. It is necessary to correctly address “the spirit of Sibiu” in the EU, as well as the new political situation after the elections to the European Parliament.  “The digital revolution does not represent merely a threat to democracy and the European Union, but it also provides democracies with many opportunities for improving life, and interpersonal and international cooperation,” concluded Lajčák.
