Talks of Miroslav Lajčák in Antalya

8.2.2020 | Aktivity ministra |

Today (February 8, 2020), the visit of Miroslav Lajčák, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Slovak Republic to the Republic of Turkey, continued with his agenda in the Antalya Province. His consultations with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkey Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu primarily focused on aspects of regional development, including security issues, particularly regarding the conflicts in Syria and Libya, and the tensions in Turkey’s relations with Iraq and Iran.

Miroslav Lajčák emphasized that Slovakia strongly supports all initiatives and political processes that aim at a peaceful resolution of the conflicts, including a peace settlement on Syria which would preserve its territorial integrity. “At the same time, we share the concern of the international community about a possible return of terrorists from ISIL to the northern parts of the country, which would mean a great security risk not only for the region itself but also for Europe,” emphasized the chief Slovak diplomat. As for the effort to settle the situation in Libya peacefully, Miroslav Lajčák acknowledged the bilateral meeting of ministers of foreign affairs of Turkey and Russia to discuss this issue. This meeting took place on the margins of the OSCE Ministerial Council meeting in December last year, in Bratislava. The minister expressed his unease with regard to the situation concerning Iraq and Iran. “Today Iraq needs our support and help more than ever in order to strengthen stability in the country. As for Teheran, we are concerned with the continuation of the development of the Iranian nuclear program which may have destabilizing effects on the entire region,” emphasized the chief Slovak diplomat.

The visit was completed with a working meeting with the honorary consuls of the Slovak Republic to the Republic of Turkey, which both ministers attended. Currently, there are ten Slovak honorary consuls in Turkey. Minister Lajčák appreciated their activities and contributions to the development of the Slovak-Turkish relations in the area of trade and economy. He thanked them for their assistance to the Slovak tourists in the country who found themselves in need and for their excellent representation of the Slovak Republic.
