Bratislava (13 May) – Slovakia and Greece are ready to intensify their bilateral contacts and political dialogue. This was agreed on by the foreign ministers of the two countries during their talks in Bratislava. Miroslav Lajčák, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, today received his Greek departmental counterpart, Nikos Kotzias, to discuss issues of bilateral relations as well as the Slovakia’s upcoming Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

“This is the third time we are meeting within two months, a display of renewed trust and a high degree of mutual understanding,” stated Minister Lajčák after the talks. “We have agreed to intensify our bilateral contacts and to meet at the foreign minister level on a regular basis, at least once a year,” he added.

Minister Lajčák stated that there are substantially more things that connect Slovakia and Greece than those in which the two countries’ views differ. “We have the same interest in seeing the EU internally consolidated and in jointly addressing the global challenges the Union faces. Moreover, many priority topics we want to focus on during our Presidency are identical with the contemporary priorities of Greece, including reducing unemployment among young people, strengthening the internal market, and energy,” he specified.

The counterparts also delved into the issue of migration, where Minister Lajčák reminded that the migrant crisis is a crisis for all of the European Union, not just a problem for Greece and Italy. The ministers also discussed the situation in the Western Balkans where Slovakia and Greece are interested in assisting countries of that region in their EU integration efforts.
