Today (1 January 2019) Slovakia assumed the Chairmanship of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). Throughout this year, Slovakia will set the tone of this, the biggest regional security organization in the world, with 57 participating states and 11 partners for cooperation on three continents.  As the Chairmanship country, Slovakia will represent the OSCE externally during the upcoming period. The post of the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office has been assumed by Miroslav Lajčák, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, who will also officially present the priorities of Slovakia’s Chairmanship at the OSCE headquarters in Vienna on 10 January 2019.

During its Chairmanship period, Slovakia will organize and co-organize approximately 50 events at various levels. Approximately half of them will be held in Bratislava and its surrounding area.  In summer 2019, the informal meeting of the OSCE Foreign Ministers will be held. The top-level Chairmanship event, which will be the biggest one of its kind ever in the modern history of Slovakia, will be the OSCE Ministerial Council in December 2019. Seventy national delegations are expected to participate in this meeting.  There will also be 12 high-profile international top-level conferences held in Slovakia. They will focus on topics such as antisemitism, violent extremism and radicalization, economics and the environment, cyber security, security sector governance and reform.
