Declaration of MZVEZ on the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty

2.8.2019 | Slovensko a NATO | Vyhlásenia a stanoviská ministerstva

Concerning today’s declaration of the North Atlantic Council and also the EU Declaration on the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty of 14 July 2019, the Slovak Republic together with NATO and the EU member states expresses disappointment at the fact that the Russian Federation has not, despite numerous diplomatic calls from NATO and the EU member states, used the past six months to take the actions that are necessary in order to preserve this key pillar of European security.  The period of six months from the intention of the US to withdraw from the INF Treaty on the grounds that it has been violated by the deployment of the unauthorised Russian ground-based missile systems 9M729 should have allowed for the Russian party to renew its full compliance with its treaty obligations.

In this regard, the Slovak Republic fully supports the preparation of the respective NATO defence measures to safeguard the security of the Alliance member states and their citizens. Given the offensive nature of the intermediate-range nuclear forces, we call upon the Russian Federation and the United States of America to make use of the bilateral dialogue on strategic security as well as of multilateral forums in order to strengthen international regimes relevant for the control of armaments, disarmament and non-proliferation, including via the withdrawal and elimination of the already deployed unauthorised Russian systems 9M729.
