František Ružička, State Secretary of the Slovak Foreign and European Affairs Ministry, received today (15 November) Andrew Garth, Ambassador of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, to discuss the current developments in the talks regarding the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union.

They agreed that both the achievement of an agreement at the negotiators' level and the statement of PM Theresa May on the government support for the agreement represent significant progress in the negotiations. In the coming days the process by which the agreement needs to be adopted at the political level will begin. In this context a decision by the President of the European Council was made to summon an extraordinary summit of EU27 leaders to be held on 25 November. The talks at the EU as well as in the United Kingdom will focus not only on the extensive legal text of the Agreement on the withdrawal but also on the political declaration regarding the framework of future relations. “Slovakia will be a pragmatic and flexible partner in this process. Our objective is to conclude the part concerning the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the EU as soon as possible and to concentrate on our common future. I think that the negotiators attained the best results that were possible and the final confirmation of this agreement would be the best signal for our citizens and business leaders. We still have lots of work ahead of us regarding other issues which are no less important such as partnership in foreign and security policies, as well as concluding the free trade agreement as fast as possible,” said Ružička.
