In the immediate reaction to the British Prime Minister Theresa May´s speech delivered in Florence today (22 September), State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic Ivan Korčok held a telephone call in the early evening from Washington with Michel Barnier, the EU’s Chief Negotiator for Brexit.  As it was said during their call, May chose a constructive tone, which attests to the efforts to make major steps as soon as possible and agree on the conditions of the UK leaving the EU. “We need to agree on Brexit and its conditions, including the finances and providing the rights of the citizens, by the end of this year at the latest. Otherwise we will be left with too little time to devote to establishing the future relations between London and the EU," said Korčok. “I appreciate Theresa May´s view that Britain's national interest is in a strong EU.  We are also interested in the cooperation with a strong United Kingdom.  The speech we have heard is coming in a critical moment and attests to the fact that time has become the most precious commodity in the Brexit talks.  Some aspects of her speech will require a detailed analysis; however, we can already now welcome the assurance that the United Kingdom would like to continue to take part in the programs which are greatly to the UK and the EU’s joint advantage and, in doing so, to cover its fair share of the costs involved, “ said the Slovak State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs.
