State Secretary Korčok and British Foreign Secretary Johnson discuss timely challenges

State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs SR, Ivan Korčok, arrived in London yesterday (15 October) upon invitation from Boris Johnson, the Foreign Secretary of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Together with foreign ministers from the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania, Croatia and Slovenia they discussed timely foreign policy topics, inter alia the decision by US President Donald Trump not to certify that Iran is complying with its obligations under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) regarding Iran's nuclear program.

“The Iran Nuclear Program Agreement is an important success by international diplomacy. We acknowledged that our joint task is to do all we can to make sure that all parties continue observing the agreement. We will continue discussing the issue also at tomorrow’s EU Foreign Affairs Council in Luxembourg,” noted Korčok.

The discussion also pointed out the importance of cooperation in and debate about security and defence of Europe following the United Kingdom’s departure from the EU.

“We are in a phase of intensive negotiations concerning the conditions for the United Kingdom’s departure from the European Union. There is a long way to go ahead of us but one thing is certain: finding the form of future relations that will strengthen the security of our common area is in the interest of both parties,” emphasized Korčok.

The MFEA SR state secretary left London for Luxembourg to attend today’s (16 October) EU Foreign Affairs Council and Tuesday’s General Affairs Council (GAC).
