Statement of the Slovak Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs regarding the rights of Slovak citizens after Brexit

Statement of the Slovak Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs regarding the rights of Slovak citizens after Brexit

21.1.2019 | Vyhlásenia a stanoviská ministerstva |

The withdrawal of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (“the United Kingdom” or “the UK”) from the European Union following the British Government's notification should take place on 29 March 2019. At this point it is unclear whether it is going to happen in an orderly manner through the Withdrawal Agreement or without an agreement (so-called hard brexit). In the case of the orderly withdrawal, the existing rights of the EU citizens living in the UK and British citizens living in the EU will remain. The UK government has declared on 6 December 2018 that the rights of the EU citizens living in the UK would be preserved also in the case of hard brexit. The condition is reciprocity for the UK citizens living in the EU Member States. Legal certainty and the preservation of the rights of Slovak citizens living in the United Kingdom is of utmost interest of the Slovak Republic even in the case of hard brexit. Therefore,  in order to achieve reciprocity, the Slovak Republic is preparing to adopt all necessary legislative changes so that the status of British citizens living in the Slovak Republic by 29 March 2019 remains preserved also in the case of the UK´s withdrawal from the EU without agreement. The condition of the Slovak Republic is to keep reciprocity on the British side so that exactly the same treatment towards Slovak citizens living in the United Kingdom will be carried into practice.
