Miroslav Lajčák meets with Sergey Lavrov in Moscow

Today (19 February 2019), Miroslav Lajčák, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic and Chairperson-in-Office of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) met with his Russian counterpart, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sergey Lavrov. The main topics of the meeting were the current items on the agenda of the Slovak chairmanship of the OSCE and its endeavour to strengthen the role of the organisation in the sphere of conflict resolution. In this regard, the partners paid special attention to eastern and South-Eastern Ukraine as well as to the possibilities for improving the living conditions of people in areas affected by the conflict. Miroslav Lajčák talked about the results of his January visit to Kiev and to eastern Ukraine and discussed with Sergey Lavrov possible ways of helping to improve the humanitarian situation in the crisis areas along the line of contact. As a follow-up to the recent visits of the Head of Slovak diplomacy in Moldova and Georgia, the ministers also talked about the possibilities of making progress in solving ongoing conflicts on their own territories and that of others in the region of the OSCE participating states. The ministers also discussed the future of the funding of this organisation.
 
Miroslav Lajčák and Sergey Lavrov then talked about the enhancement of bilateral cooperation and its options. They also discussed the current developments in the world political arena, particularly in the context of the global security situation. A special item of the meeting were the central themes that are on the agenda of the United Nations. In this context, the partners agreed on the need to strengthen the role of multilateralism in international relations.
 
The Head of Slovak diplomacy also met in Moscow with the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Sberbank, German Gref who has been called the most influential person in the country by the economic magazine Forbes, namely in its Russian issue. The partners discussed the current economic situation in Russia and Europe, with a view towards future developments.
