Miroslav Lajčák meets with his Chinese Counterpart in Beijing

Today (24 April 2019), Miroslav Lajčák, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic arrived in the People’s Republic of China at the invitation of the State Councillor and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China Wang Yi. In Beijing he is going to speak at the 2nd Belt and Road Forum. The Chief of Slovak diplomacy began his working agenda by meeting with his Chinese counterpart. Both ministers expressed their interest in the further enhancement of bilateral cooperation and more intense contacts between the Slovak Republic and the People’s Republic of China in the political, economic and commercial areas. “Slovakia supports initiatives where it is possible to use its geographic location and transit potential,” concluded Miroslav Lajčák in this regard. He added that Bratislava is ready to make the dialogue with Beijing more intense with a focus on the set goals regarding our mutual relations, including the area of education. “We acknowledge that the Slovak language and culture is being studied by almost 60 students and that 37 students from your country are enrolled at Slovak universities,” stated Minister Lajčák.  The ministers discussed issues concerning the further development of cooperation in bilateral and multilateral areas, particularly in the context of the United Nations, where China plays an important role as a permanent member of the UN Security Council. In this regard, they assessed the possibility of the mutual support of candidatures for international organisations. Miroslav Lajčák and Wang Yi also discussed relations between China and the EU in light of the most recent EU-China summit.
