Celebration of 30th anniversary of Velvet revolution in Latvia and Lithuania

One of the most significant milestones in the modern history of then Czechoslovakia was marked by the exhibition dedicated to the events of November ´89 until first free parliamentary elections. The Slovak exhibition entitled „Road to Freedom“ together with the Czech exhibition “Velvet revolution 1989” went on display on three occasions.

  

The events started at Europe Union House in Riga on 13 November. Ambassador of the Slovak Republic Ladislav Babčan, Ambassador of the Czech Republic Jana Hynková and representative of the Czech National Museum Michal Stehlík launched the opening of the exhibition with their address to the audience emphasizing the achievements this revolution brought to our societies.

 

The joint celebration continued the following day at the NATO military base in Ādaži. Some 150 Slovak soldiers joined by their 50 Czech counterparts honored the anniversary by a ceremony and the same exhibition.

 

The festivities wrapped up in the Lithuanian parliament – Seimas on 14 November. Its speaker Viktoras Pranckietis teamed up with Slovak and Czech Ambassadors at the opening to pay tribute to the successful fight for democracy and freedom.
