Minister Lajčák in Jerusalem: “Not forgetting the Holocaust is our obligation”

28.3.2017 | Aktivity ministra |

Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, Miroslav Lajčák, who is visiting Israel while accompanying the President of the Slovak Republic Andrej Kiska, included in his own program a meeting with Oded Forer, a Member of the Knesset (MK) and head of the Israel-Slovakia Parliamentary Friendship Group, today (28 March) in Jerusalem. In the discussion Minister Lajčák appreciated the frequency of mutual visits at the level of parliamentary delegations as well as at the level of government ministers (including the visits most recently by Deputy Prime Minister Peter Pellegrini and last year by Minister of Culture Marek Maďarič from Slovakia). The partners also expressed both parties’ interest in strengthening the economic dimension of relations that may be boosted by the announced visit by Israeli Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein in June this year, possibly also with an official business delegation from Israel.

Minister Lajčák and MK Forer discussed the current problems tormenting Europe and the world, including a rising wave of nationalism, extremism and xenophobia. In that regard the minister assured his host that Slovakia enacted and practically applies zero tolerance for manifestations of antisemitism and Holocaust denial. “Not forgetting the Holocaust, commemorating the victims of fascism and mediating and transferring the lessons learned from the horrors of the war to the next generations is our obligation,” stated Lajčák while reminding that already back in 2001 the Slovak Parliament adopted 9 September as the Day of Commemoration of the Victims of the Holocaust and Racial Violence and every year that day’s commemoration event is attended by high-ranking state officials, including the President of Slovakia, the Speaker of the Slovak Parliament and the Prime Minister.

Minister Lajčák, accompanying the President of Slovakia, attended a meeting today with Palestine’s Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah, held talks with the Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki and then visited the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem. The minister’s program tomorrow continues with meetings with officials from the State of Israel.
