Statement of the Slovak Foreign Ministry to the Status of Jerusalem

Statement of the Slovak Foreign Ministry to the Status of Jerusalem

26.12.2017 | Vyhlásenia a stanoviská ministerstva | |

In response to the information published by certain media on Slovakia supposedly “considering the relocation” of the Slovak embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem; the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic underscores that the position of the Slovak Republic has been repeatedly and unequivocally made clear: we consider the two-state model the only sustainable solution to the situation on the ground, addressing the concerns of both parties – safety on the side of Israel and statehood and sovereignty on the side of the Palestinians. With respect to the future status of Jerusalem, Slovakia’s position is based on UNSC resolution n. 478/1980 and the common position of the EU emphasizing that the status of Jerusalem as the future capital of the two states must result from direct negotiations between the parties involved, and not from unilateral political decisions. Slovakia has affirmed this position by assenting to the conclusions of the European Council as agreed to on December 14, 2017 and by voting in favor of UNGA resolution to Jerusalem on December 21, 2017.

Slovakia will continue to respect the international consensus on Jerusalem anchored within the aforementioned UNSC resolution including the placement of its diplomatic mission until the time the final status of Jerusalem is solved.
