Together with the President of the Slovak Republic Andrej Kiska, State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic Ivan Korčok today (19 September) attended the opening of the plenum of the 72nd UN General Assembly session in New York and the meeting with incumbent President of the UN General Assembly Miroslav Lajčák.

As for the speech of the Slovak President at the UN General Assembly, Korčok considers the challenge to come back to the principles and values defining the UN at its birth - peace and security as basic prerequisites for creating a healthy, prosperous and just society for everyone on this planet, which is also the focus selected for the 72nd General Assembly by its President Lajčák - to be essential. "Many millions of people suffer in areas of armed conflict and many risk their lives on long journeys to safety. The list of conflicts and crises is expanding and they are becoming more and more complicated, requiring coordinated action and reaction from the UN, focused on preventive diplomacy, mediation, building peace and enhancing the resilience of countries and their societies.  We must also concentrate on the UN peacekeeping operations, which should be faster and more efficient in the field. We need to be united, coordinated and also sufficiently vigorous to be able to help those who need it the most,” said Korčok, recalling Slovakia´s commitment towards the UN Charter´s principles and objectives: Slovakia is assuming its share of responsibility for international development, peace and human rights.

In the afternoon, the State Secretary met with Fiona Hill, Director for Europe and Russia in the US National Security Council, with whom he discussed security issues, especially in relation to North Korea, Afghanistan, and southeastern Ukraine.  In talks with her, Korčok confirmed our engagement to support the Afghan security forces, especially through training of local experts for repair and maintenance of military technology. He also reiterated that Slovakia adheres to and promotes the EU´s unity regarding the sanctions against Russia.

On Wednesday (20 September), Korčok will gave an address at Conference on Facilitating Entry into Force of Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty and will also hold bilateral meetings with representatives of US Jewish organizations B’nai B‘rith International and the American Jewish Committee.
