The UN reform is one of the most resonant UN processes. Global challenges also require global response – based on a firm and efficient United Nations. This was said in New York on Monday (18 September) by State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic Ivan Korčok, who represented the Slovak Republic as one of the representatives from 12 co-hosting countries of the UN management reform event, hosted by US President Donald Trump. “We are convinced that the UN reform efforts have the potential to improve the functioning of the organization, to reinforce its position and respect world-wide. The Slovak Republic is ready to support the UN Secretary-General and his team in these efforts.  We are convinced that it´s necessary to approach the three reform areas – peace and security, the development pillar, and the management – jointly, as these topics are closely interlinked,” said Korčok. The Slovak Republic has long-term promoted the UN reform agenda, the aim of which is to create a more flexible and efficient organization.

On the eve of the opening of the 72nd UN General Assembly session, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres organized a high-level meeting on special measures concerning sexual exploitation and abuse in the UN peace-keeping missions. It is aimed to express solidarity and stress the commitment of the heads of states and governments, leaders of international and regional organizations, as well as civic society, to help victims of sexual exploitation and abuse.  The event also reflects the report by the UN Secretary-General on special measures concerning sexual exploitation and abuse. “I attended the event to send a clear political signal on behalf of the Slovak Republic and support a zero tolerance policy with respect to sexual abuse.  Protection of human rights, civilians, and life´s dignity, as well as the help to the victims, are moral principles we closely follow and promote at international forums. The guarantee of human dignity is also among the priorities of President of the 72nd UN General Assembly session Miroslav Lajčák,” said Korčok. The Slovak Foreign and European Affairs Ministry´s State Secretary also held bilateral talks with Carlos de Icaza, Mexican Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs, and also attended the high-level meeting on the impact of Hurricane Irma organized by President of the 72nd UN General Assembly session Lajčák together with UN Secretary-General Guterres, and wrapped up his first working day in New York at an informal EU foreign ministers´ meeting on developments in Libya.
