17.7.2019 | Aktivity ministra | Slovensko a OSN

Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic Miroslav Lajčák held talks in New York today (17 July 2019) with María Fernanda Espinosa Garcés, the current President of the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly, as well as Tijjani Muhammad-Bande, the President-elect of the upcoming 74th session and two other former Presidents – Joseph Deiss and Peter Thomson (of the 65th and 71st sessions respectively). The partners primarily focused on sharing the acquired experiences and on strengthening the role of the General Assembly as the fundamental corner stone of multilateralism. In this regard they also discussed the reinforcing of the institutional memory of the office of the President of the General Assembly, the efficient transfer of the office, as well as the coordination of this office with the main UN agencies. Lajčák emphasized the need to harmonize our own priorities as closely as possible with the Presidential mandate. “The implementation of our own priorities through meeting the determined mandate is the most efficient way to realize our own objectives and visions,” stated the head of Slovak diplomacy and the President of the previous 72nd UN General Assembly session.  The partners also delved into issues concerning transparency, responsibility and financing.  In this regard Minister Lajčák drew attention to the need for a pro-active attitude in informing the public about the functioning of the office and the meaningful dialogue with all stakeholders.

This was the second invitation for Minister Lajčák as the former President of the UN General Assembly by María Fernanda Espinosa Garcés. The first one was held in February this year, when a group of several former UN General Assembly Presidents met to discuss making their former office more efficient.  The core objective of the meeting today was to transfer experiences to the President-elect of the upcoming 74th session Tijjani Muhammad-Bande to help him in his preparation to responsibly carry out the function he will take over in 2 months as his is not only in the interest of the organization but also in line with the respective resolution.
