Today Miroslav Lajčák discussed the parameters of cooperation during his term as President of the UN General Assembly that he will assume on 12 September, with Jeffrey Sachs, American economist and professor at Columbia University in New York.

“I perceive close dialogue with universities and academia as one of the means to fulfil the fundamental principle of my mandate – People First,” noted Lajčák. Professor Sachs, who presently is also an advisor to UN Secretary-General António Guterres on issues of sustainable development, accepted Lajčák’s offer for cooperation during the forthcoming General Assembly. Sachs will be Lajčák’s external advisor with no claim for financial remuneration, especially on issues of development, combatting poverty, education, climate change and conflict prevention, as well as cooperation with universities. According to Lajčák, the United Nations will face an unprecedented number of challenges next year, last but not least, implementation of the sustainable development goals. “I am looking forward to cooperation with Professor Sachs as a top economist and expert on development and also as an experienced academician,” Lajčák noted.
