Miroslav Lajčák, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, met with Mons. Paul Richard Gallagher, the Holy See Secretary for Relations with States, in Bratislava on Thursday night (5 March), while he was in Bratislava for a meeting of legal experts of the European bishops’ conferences.

During their courteous meeting both partners evaluated the current status of the relations between the Slovak Republic and the Holy See. “I believe, through our joint effort, we will successfully complete expert negotiations on and agreement on mutual recognition of education documents and combine its signing with your awaited official visit to Slovakia. I am convinced that the new international agreement between the Slovak Republic and the Holy See will facilitate the process of recognition of academic degrees for graduates from the Papal universities and assist in strengthening academic mobility,” Minister Lajčák said to his Vatican counterpart.

Minister Lajčák noted that new opportunities for deepening mutual dialogue are also presented through the upcoming presidency of the Slovak Republic of the European Union Council in the 2nd half of 2016. In that regard he appreciated the interest by the Bishops’ Conference of Slovakia in participating in the activities of the National Convention on the European Union. At the conclusion of the meeting both partners exchanged their views of the developments in Ukraine, the Western Balkans and the Middle East. They devoted special attention to the issue of protecting Christian values in regions of the world in crisis.
