Slovakia-Vatican: Interest in maintaining good relations

16.3.2016 | Aktivity ministra |

Bratislava (16 March) - Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic Miroslav Lajčák received Apostolic Nuncio to the Slovak Republic Monsignor Mario Giordana in Bratislava today and evaluated Slovak-Vatican cooperation.

They especially focused on finalizing preparations for the agreement on mutual recognition of education certificates, which should make mobility of university graduates of both contractual parties easier. Furthermore, Minister Lajčák appreciated the cooperation and the attitude of the Catholic Church vis-à-vis the migration crisis – notably in case of the relocation of 149 Assyrian refugees from Iraq to Slovakia. “One of the problems concerning integration of the persecuted people – coming from a different cultural environment – is prejudice and fear of the unknown. It’s here where the church plays a core role, as it can explain things in everyday, direct contact with people,"  stated Minister Lajčák.

In the context of the forming of the new coalition government, Minister Lajčák assured him that Slovakia is interested in continuing good contacts and cooperation with the Holy See in the next term as well.
