Inauguration of the International Religious Freedom Alliance

Inauguration of the International Religious Freedom Alliance

6.2.2020 | SR v medzinárodných organizáciách | Ľudské práva

Following the invitation of the US Secretary of State, Michael Pompeo, an inauguration event of the International Religious Freedom Alliance took place in Washington on February 5, 2020. Slovakia was represented by the country’s Ambassador to the United States, Ivan Korčok. The International Religious Freedom Alliance is a continuation of the initiative presented at two ministerial events aimed to support religious freedom. These events took place in Washington, in 2018 and 2019, and were then announced by Donald Trump at the 74th session of the UN General Assembly.

By endorsing the Declaration of the International Religious Freedom Alliance, the Slovak Republic, together with other EU member states, has joined other countries in condemning violence against people on the grounds of religious faith and condemning the restriction of the right to hold no belief. It further joins those countries that reject the discrimination of individuals on the grounds of religion or faith.

The Declaration of Principles for the International Religious Freedom Alliance is not legally binding and refers to the human rights documents of the United Nations and the guidelines of the European Union and the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe. The activities of the International Religious Freedom Alliance shall be complementary to the activities of the United Nations Organisation.
