Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic Miroslav Lajčák has met today with Pope Benedict XVI at the end of the general audience today (November 14, 2012). On this occasion, he informed the Holy Father about the preparations for the celebrations of the 1150th anniversary of the arrival of the Sts. Cyril and Methodius to our territory, being held under the auspices of President of the Slovak Republic Ivan Gašparovič. He conveyed to the Holy Father the message that the Government of the Slovak Republic considers the Cyril-Methodius Jubilee to be an exceptional occasion to commemorate. It is the most important spiritual and cultural moment in the history of the Slovak nation, which, even in this complicated period influenced by the global crisis, serves as a source of inspiration and universal values for the current and future generations. Minister Lajčák confirmed to the Holy Father the support of the Slovak Republic vis-à-vis the invitation of the head of state and Slovak bishops for the apostolic journey to the Slovak Republic. “It will be an honor for us. We will be greatly honored if we could welcome Your Holiness to Slovakia,” emphasized Lajčák as he presented the Holy Father with a Slovak wood-carving of Sts. Cyril and Methodius. Concurrently, he expressed his deep appreciation of the pontiff’s all-round efforts in supporting freedom, peace, and stability in the world, in building solidarity among nations, and developing dialogue among cultures and religions. Pope Benedict XVI asked Minister Lajčák to pass along his cordial greetings to the President and Government, as well as to all the citizens of the Slovak Republic. Within the second day of his visit to the Holy See, Minister Lajčák also met with Jozef Šofranko, head of the Slovak broadcasting unit of Vatican Radio that started its regular broadcasting for Slovak listeners 65 years ago with a Christmas message from the head of the Catholic Church.
