VISA INFORMATION

What is the Schengen area

The Schengen area is a part of the territory of the European Union in which the rules of free movement of persons, goods, services and capital apply. People may freely travel around this area without any border checks at internal borders of Schengen Member States. In fact, the internal borders were abolished and border checks at Schengen external borders have been reinforced in order to safeguard the security of Member States. The joint border check rules and effective oversight on the external borders aim at preventing illegal migration, drug trafficking and other illegal activities. The Schengen Member States also apply a uniform visa policy regime.

 

Members of the Schengen area: Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, the Netherlands, Iceland, Lithuania, Lichtenstein, Latvia, Luxembourg, Hungary, Malta, Germany, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Austria, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Swiss Confederation, Sweden and Italy.
 

Short term stay

Short term stay in the Schengen area is a stay for tourism, study or business purposes not exceeding period total of 90 days within a six-month period subsequent to the date of the first entry.
 

Visa free entry for short term stay

The citizens of Argentina, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay bearing a valid national passport with validity that exceeds the intended stay by at least 3 months do not need a visa for short term stay.
According to the current Slovak Law on the Residence of Aliens each foreigner visiting Slovakia must have valid travel medical insurance covering all hospitalization and medical treatment costs in Slovakia (minimum insurance coverage is 30.000 euro).

The citizens of Bolivia and Peru do require a valid visa when traveling to Slovakia for any purpose.

Long term stay (over 90 days)

Persons intending to stay in Slovakia longer than a total of 90 days during any 6-month period must submit an application for a Residence either at the Slovak Embassy in Buenos Aires or at the Foreign Police Department in Slovakia.
