On 9 February 1993, the independent Slovak Republic became a member of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO). On the occasion of the 31st anniversary of Slovakia's accession to UNESCO, the Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, Juraj Blanár, highlighted Slovakia's activities and prestigious achievements in one of the most renowned specialised agencies in the United Nations system.

Thirty-one years ago, an independent Slovak Republic was admitted to the United Nations (UN) as a full member. On 19 January 2024, in commemoration of the anniversary of Slovakia's accession to the United Nations, the Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, Juraj Blanár, stressed the importance of Slovakia's inclusion in the international organisation, which currently associates 193 countries of the world.

Russia's aggression against Ukraine further increases the need to return to the ideals of the United Nations (UN) Charter and respect for its principles, stated Foreign Affairs Minister Miroslav Wlachovsky on the occasion of the 78th anniversary of the Charter's signing on 26 June 2023. In his words, this key document not only constitutes the legal basis for the functioning of the UN, but also lays down the principles of international relations. Their universality and timelessness makes them valid even today.

On 24 June, the Slovak Republic commemorates the Day of Remembrance and Respect to Victims of the Communist Regime - all those wrongly convicted and imprisoned between 1948 and 1989. On this date, 24 June 1954, a doctor, political prisoner and Catholic dissident Silvester Krčméry was unjustly convicted of alleged treason, after being tortured.

On the sidelines of the 67th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women, Slovakia together with Austria and Czechia, organized on 9 March 2023 in the UN premises a side-event on online safety and digital empowerment of women-journalists. The event was co-sponsored by UNESCO, the International Press Institute and the Committee to Protect Journalists. UN Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications Ms Melissa Fleming, UNESCO Director of Gender Equality Division Ms Maria Begona Lasagabaster and the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Ms Dunja Mijatovič delivered their remarks during the event.

The Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, Rastislav Káčer, recalled that the UN welcomed Slovakia from the very start – a fact proven by the short time separating the country's establishment and its accession to the organisation.

The Slovak Republic joined the 142 states that voted in the United Nations (UN) General Assembly on Wednesday, 12 October 2022, to unequivocally condemn the Russian Federation's attempts to illegally annex Ukrainian territories through the organisation of illegal referendums in Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhya regions.
