Naše poslanie

The United Nations (UN) is an intergovernmental organization founded in 1945, after the Second World War, by 51 countries which committed themselves to maintaining international peace and security, developing friendly relations among nations and promoting social progress, better standards of life and human rights. As the only universal international organization in the world, the UN covers practically all areas of human activity. Its three main pillars are constituted by: 1) peace and security; 2) socio-economic development; 3) human rights.

Czechoslovakia was among the 51 founding members of the UN in 1945. After the peaceful and orderly dissolution of the Czech and Slovak Federal Republic, the Slovak Republic became a UN Member State on 19 January 1993. Slovakia considers the United Nations as the bedrock of the multilateral rules-based order. Slovakia supports the UN as a key convener and enabler of global solutions across all policy areas. In this context, the UN provides a unique added value to the citizens of the Slovak Republic.

The Permanent Mission of the Slovak Republic to the United Nations in New York is the diplomatic mission representing Slovakia and its interests at the main UN bodies, agencies, funds and programmes of the UN system with their headquarters in New York and develops relations with them. Through the Permanent Mission, Slovakia gets involved and participates in intergovernmental meetings and negotiations under the UN auspices, which are held at the UN Headquarters in New York. The Permanent Mission is headed by Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary – Permanent Representative of the Slovak Republic to the United Nations. The current Permanent Representative of Slovakia to the United Nations, Ambassador Michal Mlynár, took up the post by presenting his credentials to UN Secretary-General António Guterres on 18 August 2017.
