    Please note that the emergency number is to be used only in the most severe cases, including the arrest or other restriction of personal freedom, when a citizen becomes a victim of a crime, serious accidents (severe injury or hospitalization), and illnesses, in case of death or repatriation.

     

    The Embassy of the Slovak Republic in Washington, D.C., provides consular protection to citizens of the Slovak Republic and to citizens of a member state of the European Union with no representation therein: if it has no embassy, consulate, or honorary consulate which is effectively in position to provide consular protection. Same applies for family members.

    The Consular section of the Embassy of the Slovak Republic in Washington, D.C., is closed to the public on Tuesdays and Thursdays and during the holidays.

     

    In 2023, the Embassy will be closed on: January 2, January 16, February 20, April 7, April 10, May 29, June 19, July 4, September 4, October 9, November 10, December 25, December 26.

     

    How to schedule an appointment

    Please first schedule an appointment at the Consular section by emailing: cons.washington@mzv.sk.

     

    How to prepare for an appointment

    Please bring a valid document of identification:

    • Citizens of the Slovak Republic: valid Slovak passport or valid identification card issued by the Slovak Republic,
    • Citizens of the member states of the European Union (member states of the Schengen area), Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein: valid passport or valid identification card issued by the state of the citizenship which allows for entering the Slovak Republic,
    • Citizens of other countries: valid passport recognized by the Slovak Republic.
    • Persons younger than eighteen (18) and persons with a disability must be accompanied by their legal guardians. They must present proof of their relationship in original, e.g., a birth certificate, a decision by the court, etc.

    Please note that all other official documents must be either:

    • Issued or authenticated by the state authorities of the Slovak Republic; or
    • Properly authenticated (by an apostille or a consular legalization) and translated into Slovak when the official documents have been issued by the foreign state authorities. If there are any exceptions, the Consular section will communicate them before the appointment.

    ​​​​​Note: The United States and the Slovak Republic are members of the 1961 Hague Convention, therefore the official documents used outside of the U.S. must be authenticated by an apostille. Apostille is a certificate verifying signatures, stamps, or seals on official documents. These documents can include court orders, contracts, vital records, educational diplomas, and more. Documents, such as vital records issued by a U.S. state, will need an apostille from that state's Secretary of State. Federal documents, such as an FBI background check, require an apostille from the U.S. Department of State.

    All documents other than in Slovak or Czech languages must be translated into the Slovak language by the official translator registered by the Ministry of Justice of the Slovak Republic. Please refer to the first one on the list.

     

    How to get to the Consular section in Washington, D.C.

    By Car: The address is 3523 International Court NW, Washington, D.C. 20008. Please park your vehicle in one of the three parking spots outside the Slovak Embassy marked with SVK on the cones. Before parking, please place the cone on the curb.  

    By Metro: Use the Red line and get off at the Van Ness metro station.

    By Bus: The following transit lines have routes that pass near the Embassy Of the Slovak Republic: 31, H2, and L2.

    Administrative fees

    The Consular section accepts only payments by credit card. Please note that the administrative fees may change monthly due to the variable currency rates (EUR-USD).

    Respective jurisdiction just for Schengen visa application

    Consulate General of the Republic of Austria in Los Angeles, CA, represents the Slovak Republic in the issuance of Schengen visa for applicants residing in the following states: Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, California, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, Wyoming, and dependent U.S. territories.
